GENERAL INFORMATION about the Scholarship: This scholarship is intended to help develop the theatermakers of the future. For the inaugural year of the Patté Scholarship, we are making the award available ONLY to members of the California Youth Conservatory, our fiscal partner for 2007-2008. If you would like to apply for the scholarship, a committee of Theater Professionals will evaluate your entry. If you're a winner, you will receive a check, a certificate and two tickets to the Patté Awards gala on Jan. 14, 2008, in the David and Dorothea Garfield Theatre on the Jacobs Campus at the Lawrence Family JCC in La Jolla. At the event, the award will be presented by theater critic Pat Launer, creator/host of the Patté Awards, along with the family of Dr. Floyd Gaffney.
Submission Details WHO: Students who were participants in the California Young Actors Conservatory from January 2007 through January 2008. You must be at least 15, and no older than 20 as of Dec 21, 2008. You may be an actor; costume, set, lighting or sound designer; properties or tech person; stage manager or director. WHAT: Write an essay of no more than 250 words. Discuss why you think theater is important. Your response should cover, but not be limited to, the following: why theater is important to you personally, why it should be important to your peers, why it’s important to the community and/or the culture at large. The specific style and form of the essay are up to you. If a given play, person or experience influenced your decision to pursue theater, include that, too. Feel free to be expressive and creative! Entries will be judged on the following criteria:
WHY: Pat Launer, a renowned San Diego theater critic and creator/host of the Patté Awards, is a lifelong supporter of encouraging young talent and developing the theatermakers and theatergoers of the future. Dr. Floyd Gaffney, who passed away in July 2007, was a beloved theater director and UCSD Professor Emeritus who was the father of African-American theater in San Diego. As a teacher and mentor, he was an inspiration to many young theatermakers. This award is a fitting tribute to his memory and his commitment to young people. WHEN: Entries must be postmarked no later than Dec. 21, 2007. Essays may be submitted by email or snailmail.
